All my congratulations to the happy parents of Julien, who came into the world just a few days ago! In these cold days of winter, he’ll be cuddling up in his mama’s arms all covered up in the baby blanket that arrived just in time for the happy occasion. This little sprite also went off to meet him and bid him welcome!

After knitting three large shawls as gifts, I wanted to make one for myself. On Ravelry, I fell in love with this pattern. I imagined it in autumnal colors: chestnut brown, rusty red or pumpkin orange. But I didn’t find a yarn in any of these colors at my favorite yarn store. Instead, I bought some locally-produced yarn: natural 100% wool in a rustic beige tone. It reminded me of some yarn I once bought on the Aran Islands — its natural quality would go well with the cables in the pattern.

Mais une fois rentrée, j’ai eu quelques doutes concernant l’accord entre cette laine et le modèle. Je n’arrivais pas à enlever les couleurs d’automne de ma tête. Pour moi, il fallait de la Cascade 220 Heathers et rien d’autre. Mais je venais tout juste d’acheter cette merveilleuse laine du pays. Qu’allais-je faire?

But when I got home, I began to have some doubts as to this yarn-pattern combination. I couldn’t get those autumn colors out of my head. It had to be Cascade 220 Heathers for this pattern, and nothing else. But I had just bought this marvelous rustic yarn. What was I going to do?

Et bien, c’est Bulle qui m’a sauvé (je lui envoie un gros merci)! Quand j’ai vu son textured shawl, j’ai su à quoi cette laine naturelle était destiné. Et le résultat prouve que je n’avais pas tort.

Well, it’s Bulle who save me (and I thank her greatly)! When I saw her textured shawl, I knew what this natural wool was destined for. And the result proves it.

Un motif élégant mais simple, un modèle facile à modifier — c’était un vrai coup de coeur. Et la laine qui était un peu rêche au début est devenue beaucoup plus souple après lavage. Même Mr. B semble être tombé sous le charme de cette laine, car quand il a vu le résultat il m’a demandé s’il m’en restait. “Pourquoi?” lui ai-je demandé. “Car j’aimerais bien un bonnet dans cette laine.”

An elegant yet simple motif in a pattern that is easy to modify — it has already joined the ranks of my all-time favorites. And the yarn, which was a bit rough, became much softer after washing. Even Mr. B seems to have fallen under the charm of this wool, because when he saw the result he asked if I had any of it left. “Why?” I asked. “Because I wouldn’t mind having a winter cap made out of it,” he replied.

Several days ago, Mr. B asked if I’d knit him a winter cap. How could I refuse? He rarely asks me to knit him something and then, after all, a cap is an easy, quick knitting project. At least that’s what I thought.

D’abord, il fallait trouver le modèle. Il n’avait pas d’idée précise de ce qu’il voulait, et il n’a rien vu sur Ravelry qui lui plaisait vraiment. J’allais donc devoir créer un modèle. J’ai feuilleté mon dico de points de tricot pour voir ce que je pouvais lui proposer. Il a choisi un motif “cloqué” (des torsades) — rien de trop compliqué. J’ai fouillé un peu dans mon “stash” pour voir si j’avais déjà une laine qui pourrait lui convenir, et la recherche a été fructueuse: une laine d’origine et matière inconnues acheté pour trois fois rien il y a deux ou trois ans à Destocklaine (Paris), doublée avec de la Phildar Nanette qu’une amie tricoteuse m’a donné car elle n’en avait plus l’utilité. C’est chouette des projets comme ça, qui coutent rien et me permettent de réduire mon “stash”!

First thing to do was to choose a pattern. Mr. B had no specific idea of what he wanted and he didn’t see anything on Ravelry that caught his fancy. I was going to have to create the cap from scratch. I flipped through my dictionary of knitting stitches and made a list of motifs for him to choose from. He liked the “honeycomb” stitch (a cable motif) — nothing too complicated. I rifled through my stash to see if I had anything that might work, and came up with a cone of yarn of unknown origin and composition that I bought for nearly nothing two or three years ago at Destocklaine in Paris. I decided to double it with some Phildar Nanette that a knitting friend gave to me, as she had no further need of it. What a promising start — a project that doesn’t cost a penny and that helps me reduce my stash!

Après l’échantillon, prise de mesure de la tête de Mr. B, et quelques calculs, j’étais prête à me lancer. J’ai monté mes 96 mailles, tricoté quelques centimètres en côtes 2-2, et commencé le motif “cloqué”. Et c’est là que le premier hic est arrivé. D’une part, la laine ne mettait pas en valeur le motif (en fait, on le voyait quasiment pas) et d’autre part, les torsades faisait rétrécir le tricot. Un petit essayage a confirmé mes craintes: le bonnet était bien trop petit.

Once I had knitted a sample square, measured the circumference of Mr. B’s head and made a few calculations, I was ready to get started. I cast on 96 stitches, knitted a couple inches of 2-2 ribbing and then began the “honeycomb” motif. And that’s when I hit the first snag. Not only did the yarn hide the motif (in fact, in was nearly invisible), the cables caused the fabric to shrink in size. A quick fitting by Mr. B confirmed my fears: the cap was much too small.

Tentative #2: Reprise de mesures, montage de 120 mailles cette fois-ci, et on a décidé de laisser tomber le motif pour un bonnet tout simple en jersey. J’ai tricoté une dizaine de centimètres de côtes 2-2 (Mr. B voulait pouvoir plier le bord) et puis plusieurs centimètres de jersey. Gros hic: le bonnet me semblait beaucoup trop grand. L’essayage l’a confirmé. Trop grand. J’ai compté le nombre de mailles à enlever: 24. 120 mailles – 24 mailles = 96. J’étais revenue au début.

Attempt #2: Recalculation of the gauge, casting on of 120 stitches this time, and we gave up on the honeycomb motif in favor of simple stocking stitch. I knitted several inches of 2-2 ribbing (Mr. B wanted to be able to fold back the rim) and then several more inches of stocking stitch. Another snag: the cap seemed to be much too big. Another fitting confirmed it: yep, too big. I counted the number of stitches to remove: 24. 120 -24 = 96. I was back at square one.

Tentative #3: Montage de 96 mailles, bonnet simple en jersey. Cette fois je n’ai même pas réussi à terminer le premier rond, car arrivée à la fin de ce premier rond je me suis trouvée avec une maille manquante et en essayant de l’ajouter j’en ai perdu trois autres. Il fallait recommencer et remonter les mailles.

Attempt #3: Casting on of 96 stitches, simple stocking stitch cap. This time I didn’t even succeed in finishing the first round, because when I got to the end of the round I discovered there was a stitch missing, and when I tried to add one, I ended up losing three others. I frogged it and cast on again.

Tentative #4: Montage de 96 mailles (comptées et recomptées pour être sûre), 13 cm de côtes 2-2, plusieurs centimètres de jersey avec plusieurs essayages pour vérifier la taille et le bon moment pour commencer le diminutions. Et enfin, c’était le bon! Terminé juste avant de sortir se balader, Mr. B était très content de pouvoir le mettre de suite.

Attempt #4: Casting on of 96 stitches (counted and double-counted to be sure), 13 cm of 2-2 ribbing, several inches of stocking stitch with numerous fittings to make sure the size was right and to determine when to start making the decreases. And finally, it was done! I finished it right before we headed out for a Sunday stroll. Mr. B was excited to be able to wear it right away and show it off.

Le bonnet de Mr. B

Au début, il était plein d’éloges: il adorait les couleurs, le grand bord pliable…. Mais au fur et à mesure de notre balade, il s’est rendu compte que ce bonnet avait quelques défauts. D’abord, il trouvait que l’air passait un peu trop (il aurait fallu utiliser des aiguilles plus petites, ou bien doubler avec une autre laine que la Nanette — l’échantillon avait été bon, quand même). Et puis, malgré tous les essayages, il l’a trouvé encore un peu trop grand (je lui avais quand même demandé à plusieurs reprises si la taille allait…). Bref, il va falloir retravailler ce bonnet, mais pas tout de suite. L’hiver prochain, peut-être.

At first, he was full of compliments: he loved the colors, the large foldable rim…. But as we strolled along, he began to realize that this cap had a few flaws. First of all, he could feel air passing through the stitches (I should have used a smaller needle size, or doubled with a different yarn — yet my sample had been fine). And then, despite all the fittings, he still felt the cap was a bit too big (I had nevertheless asked him more than once during the fittings whether the cap was tight enough…). So, I guess I’m going to have to rework this cap, but not right now. Maybe next winter…

I may not live in Strasburg, yet I’m preparing for a stork invasion. Among our friends, no less than four couples are expecting!! And where there’s a baby about to be born, there’s a baby present to make — hand-knitted, if you please!

Voici le premier, une couverture bébé avec capuche intégrée. C’est le modèle Hoodie Baby Blanket de Nikol Lohr, un vrai bijoux. Adaptable à souhait (couleurs, motifs, etc) et très pratique, ce projet m’a aussi permis de réduire mon stash (de la Phildar frimas que j’ai acheté d’occasion sur internet il y a au moins deux ans).

Here’s the first gift, a baby blanket with a hood. The pattern is the Hoodie Baby Blanket by Nikol Lohr, a true gem. Fully adaptable (color, stitch pattern, etc) and quite practical, this project also helped me reduce my stash (I used some of the Phildar Frimas that I bought secondhand on the internet over two years ago).

Avant de commencer les prochains cadeaux de naissance, je prends un peu de temps pour tricoter un peu pour moi. J’ai récemment fini un petit tour de cou qui s’est avéré assez pratique lors de notre dernière sortie au ski. J’ai utilisé la même laine mèche flammée que pour Nell (de Kim Hargreaves), le modèle d’où j’ai aussi puisé mon inspiration. Un petit après-midi, et voilà le résultat.

Before starting the other baby gifts, I’m taking some time to knit for myself. I recently finished a neckwarmer which turned out to be quite useful the last time we went skiing. I used the same yarn as for my Nell (by Kim Hargreaves), the pattern which inspired this project. After a short afternoon spent knitting, here’s the result:

For several years now, I’ve been taking art classes in oil painting. I don’t produce a lot of paintings, because I often get lost in the details, which means that I work rather slowly (a method that a friend once kindly named “kimism”, after my first name). Indeed, last year I only finished one painting, a self-portrait. But things seem to be different this year, because I’ve already finished my first painting of the year, which I am now going to present to you.

So, finally, here’s my painting, which I have named “Blue Mountains”.

Malheureusement, je ne suis pas aussi bonne photographe que Mr. B, mais cela vous donne une petite idée du rendu.

Unfortunately, I’m not as good of a photographer as Mr. B, but at least this gives you an idea of the result.

I can’t think about the Christmas holidays without thinking about cookies. Every year, in the week before Christmas Eve, my mother, sister and I would spend days making cookies, from the traditional chocolate chip to snickerdoodles, without forgetting the peanut butter cookies, amongst others. We would make four or five types of cookies at least, and in quantities that would leave the everyday Frenchperson flabbergasted.

Cette année, alors, je n’ai pas dérogé  à la règle, même si je n’ai pas préparé autant que d’habitude. (Mr. B trouve que j’ai quand même exagéré, et peut-être a-t-il raison, puisque quelques cookies trainent encore dans la cuisine…). Je me suis restreint aux ‘chocolate chip’ (moitié chocolat noir traditionnel et moitié chocolat blanc-noix de macadamia pour faire plaisir à Mr. B), des ‘peanut butter balls’ (des petites boules de beurre de cacahuètes enrobées de chocolat) et, mes préférés, les ‘sugar cookies’.

Again this year I couldn’t help but follow tradition, even if I didn’t make as many cookies as usual. (Mr. B thinks I took it a little too far anyway, and perhaps he’s right since there are a few cookies still lurking in the kitchen…). I limited myself to one batch of chocolate chip cookies (half dark chocolate and the other half white chocolate macadamia nut to please Mr. B), some peanut butter balls, and, my favorite, a batch of sugar cookies.

Je ne sais pas d’où vient cette appellation de ‘sugar cookies’, mais je le trouve insuffisant pour décrire ces petites merveilles. Et puis, le sucre est l’ingrédient phare de tous les cookies, alors cela pourrait désigner n’importe lequel. Mais bon, ce n’est pas le nom qui est important, mais le goût. Et ces cookies sont délicieux!

 I don’t know where the name ‘sugar cookies’ comes from, but I find it rather insufficient to describe these little wonders. Sugar is the main ingredient of all cookies, so the name could designate any kind of cookie. But in the end, it’s not the name that’s important, but the taste. And these cookies are delicious!

Il existe des centaines de recettes de ‘sugar cookies’. Certains préfèrent ceux qui croustillent, d’autres ceux qui sont couverts d’un glaçage. Nous, nous préférons les ‘soft sugar cookies’, ceux qui sont moelleux et saupoudrés de sucre coloré. Je ne peux pas vous dévoiler toute la recette, mais voici un aperçu de la préparation de ces cookies.

There are hundreds of sugar cookie recipes. Some people like crispy cookies, while others prefer them frosted. As for us, we always make soft sugar cookies, the ones that remain just a bit doughy and are dusted in colored sugar. I can’t reveal the entire recipe, but here’s a glance at how these cookies are made.

Le matériel / The materials:

Il faut le rouleau à pâte avec son petit tapis, du sucre coloré (il suffit d’ajouter quelques gouttes de colorant alimentaire à du sucre et mélanger), des emporte-pièces, et la pâte, bien sûr!

You’ll need a rolling pin and mat, colored sugar (just add some food coloring to sugar and mix), cookie cutters and the dough, of course!

Etape 1 / Step 1:

Prendre une boule de pâte et étaler-la (mais pas trop fin) sur un plan de travail bien fariné. Puis, couper des cookies en utilisant les emporte-pièces, en essayant de faire le moins de gaspillage possible. Placer les cookies sur une plaque beurrée.

Take a ball of dough and roll it out (but not too thinly) on a floured surface. Then, cut the cookies using the cookie cutters, trying to waste as little dough as possible. Place the cookies on a greased cookie sheet.

Etape 2 / Step 2:

Voici l’étape où vous pouvez laisser parler toute votre créativité. (Même Mr. B a participé!) Décorer les cookies en les saupoudrant de sucre coloré avant de les enfourner.

Now is the time to express all of your Christmas spirit (even Mr. B participated in this step!). Decorate the cookies by dusting them with the colored sugar before putting them in the oven.

Etape 3 / Step 3:

Huit à dix minutes de cuisson, et ces cookies sont prêts à être dégustés!

Eight to ten minutes later, these cookies are ready to tickle your tastebuds!

Mais faîtes attention — il ne faut pas tout manger! Il faut en laisser pour le Père Noël, quand même!

But watch out — you shouldn’t eat them all! You should leave some for Santa Claus, after all!

I know, I know, it’s a little late to be wishing you a happy new year. I’ll explain my lateness a bit later, but first I’d like to wish you a year filled with love, inspiration, tranquility and, most of all, good health.

Alors, pourquoi ce retard? Et bien, j’ai été super occupée, imaginez-vous!! D’abord par les préparations pour les fêtes (je vous en montrerai quelques images d’ici peu), puis l’arrivée de nos amis venus célébrer le nouvel an, ce qui nous a amené à la découverte du ski (des débuts pas très concluants pour moi, mais je n’ai pas perdu l’espoir), et finalement, bien sûr, par le tricot!

So, why so late? Well, I’ve been really busy, don’t you know!! First, with preparations for the holidays (I’ll show you a few pictures soon), then by the arrival of our friends who came to celebrate the new year, which led to our first try at skiing (not a very promising beginning for me, but I haven’t given up hope), and finally, with my knitting, of course!

La dernière fois que je vous ai écrit, il me restait quelques rangs à faire pour le châle de Miss S. Et bien, comme annoncé, je l’ai terminé avant Noël. Voici le résultat:

When I last wrote you, I had just a few more rows to knit to finish Miss S’s shawl. Well, as announced, I finished it before Christmas. Here’s how it turned out:

Modèle: "Terra" de Jared Flood; Laine: Lang Yarns Colora, couleur 755.0070; Aiguillles 5.5mm (US 9)

Et puisqu’il me restait de la laine, j’ai proposé à Miss S de lui faire un bonnet ou des mitaines assortis: elle a choisi un bonnet. En m’inspirant du motif en point mousse du centre du châle, je lui ai créé un petit bonnet tout mignon en toute vitesse.

Since I had some yarn left over, I asked Miss S if she’d like a matching cap or fingerless mittens — she chose the cap. Using the shawl’s central garter stitch motif as inspiration, I whipped up this cute little cap in no time.

J’ai adoré travailler avec cette laine pour la variation subtile de ses couleurs, sa douceur, et sa chaleur. Comme pour l’autre Terra faite pour ma mère, les rayures créées par la laine ont vraiment mis en valeur le motif en point mousse. Pour le moment, je ne suis pas prête à me lancer dans un troisième Terra (cette fois pour moi), mais dans un autre châle, SI!! Tricoter ces derniers projets m’a donné très envie de me faire un grand châle bien chaud.

I loved working with this yarn because of its subtle variation of colors, its softness and its warmth. As with the Terra I made for my mother, the stripes created by the yarn truly emphasized and underlined the shawl’s garter stitch motif. For now, I’m not ready to dig into a third Terra (for me this time), but in another shawl, DEFINITELY!! Knitting these last three projects has made me yearn for my own warm, oversized shawl.

J’ai déjà choisi le modèle (j’en ai même trouvé deux) et la laine qui va avec (pour les deux). Il faut juste que je trouve le temps de le(s) faire car j’ai encore d’autres tricots à terminer d’abord …. Il va falloir que j’apprenne à tricoter plus vite

I’ve already chosen the pattern (two, in fact) and the yarn to match (both). Now, I just need to find the time to knit it (them) because I’ve still got other projects to finish first…. I’m really gonna have to learn how to knit faster

If I haven’t written lately, it’s because I’m working on a big translation. It’s a call for tenders related to the oil industry, so I’ve had to do a lot of vocab research. I guess I can say that I’m learning a lot about construction and welding!

Mais cela ne veut pas dire que je ne tricote pas! Comme le titre de ce billet l’indique, la saga des châles continue. Après la Terra de ma mère et la 198 yds of heaven pour la mère de Mr. B, voilà une troisième qui est en route. En effet, samedi dernier Mr. B a reçu un appel de ses parents concernant la recherche d’un cadeau de Noël pour Miss S, la sœur de Mr. B. Est-ce que vous devinez ce qu’elle veut … ET OUI, une châle!

But that doesn’t mean I haven’t been knitting! As the title of this post says, the shawl saga continues. After my mother’s Terra and the 198 yds of Heaven  for Mr. B’s mom, there’s a third shawl taking form on my knitting needles. Indeed, last Saturday Mr. B got a call from his parents about trying to find a Christmas present for Miss S, his sister. And guess what she wants … YEP, a shawl!

Elle rêvait d’une grande châle bien chaude dans les tons gris et marron dans laquelle elle peut s’emmitoufler le soir devant la télé. “Quelque chose de moderne”, m’a-t-elle dit. Surtout pas une châle qui lui donnerait un air de mémé. Pressée par le temps (seulement deux semaines avant Noël, même si elle m’a assuré que ce n’était pas grave si la châle arrivait en retard), j’ai décidé de faire un modèle que je connaissais déjà. Suivant les conseils de Mr. B, j’ai écarté l’idée de faire le même modèle que pour sa mère, ce qui m’a mis sur la piste de la modèle Terra. Malgré la frustration que j’ai eu avec ce modèle lorsque je l’ai tricoté pour ma mère, je me suis dit qu’avec une laine de la taille recommandée par le patron cela irait beaucoup plus vite. Et c’est un modèle qui, je crois, répond aux attentes de Miss S.  En plus, les vendeuses de mon magasin de laine préféré (Au Vieux Rouet) m’ont déniché la laine parfaite pour ce projet, pile dans les couleurs et taille voulus: de la Colora de Lang Yarns, couleur 755.0070.

She envisioned a large, warm shawl in shades of gray and brown in which she could cosy up in the evening in front of the TV. “Something modern,” she said. Certainly not a granny shawl. Pressed for time (only two weeks before Christmas, even if she assured me it was OK if the shawl arrived late), I decided to use a pattern I had already knitted. Following Mr. B’s advice, I brushed aside the idea of using the same pattern as for his mother’s shawl, which left me with the idea to make another Terra. Despite the frustration this pattern caused me when I knitted it for my mother, I figured that with a worsted-weight yarn (the size suggested for the pattern), it would knit up much faster. And it’s a pattern that, I believe, corresponds to all of Miss S’s expections. What’s more, the ladies at my favorite local yarn store (Au Vieux Rouet) unearthed the perfect yarn for this project, in exactly the right size and colors: Colora by Lang yarns, color 755.0070.

Une semaine est passée depuis le coup de téléphone, et la châle de Miss S a déjà bien avancé. Il ne me reste qu’une vingtaine de rangs à faire. Avec le temps qu’il faut pour la terminer, bloquer et envoyer, elle ne l’aura pas pour Noël, mais c’est sûr qu’elle arrivera avant le nouvel an!

One week has passed since the call from Mr. B’s parents, and the shawl for Miss S had progressed rapidly. Another twenty rows or so and it’ll be done. With the time it’ll take me to finish it, block it and send it, she won’t receive it in time for Christmas, but she’ll definitely have it for New Year’s!

La question que je me pose maintenant, c’est que va dire ma sœur si elle entend parler de cette histoire???

What I’m wondering now is what will my sister say if she hears about this???

I’m sure all of you are eager to see how the shawl for Mr.B’s mother (M-T) has turned out. So, here it is!

Modèle 198 yds of Heaven de Christy Verity, Cévenne, aig 8mm (US 11)

La laine est assez rêche, alors ça risque de gratter un peu, mais le rendu est pas mal. J’espère que M-T sera contente du résultat. En tout cas, si elle ne l’aime pas, j’ai déjà un autre preneur!

The yarn is rather rough, so it may be a bit itchy, but it turned out rather well. I hope M-T will like it. If she doesn’t, however, I know someone who will!

Et bien, c’est mon nouveau dévidoir! It’s my new yarn swift!

C’est un dévidoir de style “Amish” (mais fabriqué en Chine). Tout assemblé, cela ressemble à ça:

Il est fabriqué entièrement en bois et est très facile à monter et démonter, car toutes les pièces s’emboîtent. Les trous sur les bras permettent de modifier le dévidoir par rapport à la taille de l’écheveau. Il y a même des repères sur un des bras pour aider dans cette démarche (voir photo).

It’s made entirely of wood and is very easy to assemble and take apart, because all the pieces interlock. The holes on the arms allow you to adapt the swift to the size of the hank. Measurements are even noted on one of the arms to help (see photo).

Cela faisait un moment que je rêvais d’acquérir un dévidoir, mais le prix un peu élevé de ces engins m’en dissuadait.  De temps en temps, j’errais sur le net à la recherche d’un dévidoir d’occasion ou en solde, sans trop de succès. Et puis, il y a quelques semaines, je suis tombée sur le site d’un magasin de loisirs créatifs américain qui proposait un dévidoir en solde pour seulement $35!!  J’ai tout de suite téléphoné à ma mère (qui habite aux States) pour voir si elle pouvait réceptionner le colis et là — surprise — elle m’a appris qu’elle avait un bon de réduction de $10 pour ce magasin. Un dévidoir pour $25!! Je ne pouvais pas rater cette occasion. On a tout de suite passé commande. I’d been dreaming of getting a yarn swift for a while, but was dissuaded by the cost. Every once in a while, I’d go online searching for a cheap second-hand swift, but to no avail. Then, a few weeks ago, I landed on the site of an American arts & crafts store that had a yarn swift on sale for only $35! I immediately called my mother (who lives in the States) to see if she could receive the package, and — surprise! — she told me she had a store coupon for $10 off a purchase. That reduced the price to only $25!! I couldn’t pass up on such a deal, so we made the order immediately. Even with the shipping my mother paid to send it to me here in France, this swift was a great buy!
